A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Les Misérables is a worldwide-known title, film and musical. There are a lot of assumptions and ideas as to what it is and how it’s done… For those who know me, they’ll know I like to play with these and create our OWN production. This will be no different.
To be given the right to be able to create our production with a big cast and orchestra is an honour, and one that we should all take seriously, as this opportunity won’t come around again. To be able to reimagine this wonderful production has allowed me to go back to the novel, BBC drama, original and new productions, stage concerts and movies. What interests me is the simplicity of the productions, but the vast array of locations and how we’ll transport an audience to the era and France.
We all know that by Act 2 we’ll create a Barricade. Throughout that period in France, furniture was taken and thrown on the streets to become the Barricade. When the audience arrives at the space, they will see a junkyard of furniture which throughout the show will be arranged to become the various locations, leading to it becoming the Barricade in Act 2.
I really want to get into the earthy nature of the characters. I’m not interested in replicas or you doing an impersonation of the recording. Think about the lyrics and what the music is telling you about the character’s subconscious thoughts.
We look forward to meeting you and seeing what you bring to these characters.
Best,
Chris Cuming
